Applications

Q:  What is an EPD Cable?

A: The EPD cable is engineered and designed specifically for a customer project or application using TE’s Raychem components and materials.

Q:  What are the appropriate applications for EPD cables?

A:  Commercial Aerospace, Military Ground, Military Aerospace, Military Marine, Missiles, Outer space, Transportation- Rail/Automotive, Industrial, Offshore/Subsea

Q:  When would I use EPD cable?

EPD cables are specified when the customer requires a high performance custom design solution for complex equipment connectivity.

Advantages include:

  • Small size, lightweight/weight reduction
  • Ability to include signal, power, and data in the same cable package
  • Specially formulated materials to meet environmental requirements i.e. low fire hazard, chemical/abrasion resistance, temperature flammability.
  • Wide range of shielding solutions to address EMI/EMC requirements
  • System compatibility with TE's Raychem products
  • Cost savings/labor reduction over time consuming hand-built cable harnesses

Performance/ Specifications

Q:  What specification would EPD cables meet?

A:  Based on final component and material selections it could meet general commercial, military and marine specifications such as:  WC-27500, AS22759, MIL-DTL-24640/24643, AS81044, VG9521 Parts 27 and 2, Defense Standard Part 25, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and TE's Raychem internal WCD/WSD series.

Q:  What temperature range of EPD cables can you offer?

From -65C to +260C.

Q:  What is the maximum cable diameter you can make?

Manufactured cables are limited to a maximum cabling substrate bundle diameter of 1.75" (44.5 mm).  Finished cable outside diameter (OD) would be approximately 2.0" (52.0 mm) based on this maximum substrate.

Q:  What is the AWG range?

Minimum gauge size is 30 AWG and up to 2/0 AWG can be used depending on the multicore design.

Q:  What is the minimum order quantity?

Between 500 ft- 2000 ft for most complex designs.

Materials

Q:  What jacket materials can be used in an EPD cable?

TE offers a broad range of cable jacket materials to help meet the requirements of some of the most demanding environments.

Q:  How are materials selected?

Material and component selection is determined by the end use/application.  This helps to ensure the right combination of physical, chemical, and electrical properties are achieved to meet the customer's requirements.  TE has also developed a system approach that groups compatible TE components.

Q: What types of components can be used in an EPD cable?

Cables can be organized with a variety of Raychem wire and cable products in controlled geometries for specific applications such as, single primary wire, twisted primaries, cabled/shielded/jacketed components, coax and data pairs and fiber. Those components can be further enhanced and/or protected by a combination of fillers, wraps, braids, jackets, armouring and blocking compounds to meet specific applications.
